It is interesting that the biggest accuser of being a victim of fake news is actually the biggest peddler of fake news. In his latest accusations with no evidence to back it up, Trump took to Twitter to blast former President Obama for having ordered his phones to be tapped. The intelligence community and FBI (which is also the only agency in the country authorized to perform wire taps after court ordered authorization) quickly disavowed the notion that this occurred. Faced with today’s deadline set by the House Intelligence Community for the Justice Department to provide evidence for Trump’s wiretapping claims, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said Trump wasn’t referring to wiretapping when he tweeted about wiretapping.
“I think there’s no question that the Obama administration, that there were actions about surveillance and other activities that occurred in the 2016 election,” Spicer said. “The President used the word wiretaps in quotes to mean, broadly, surveillance and other activities.” However, taking a look at the Tweets sent our in succession on this topic by Trump himself, it is difficult to take his statements any other way than literal:
“Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my “wires tapped” in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!”
“Is it legal for a sitting President to be “wire tapping” a race for president prior to an election? Turned down by court earlier. A NEW LOW!”
“How low has President Obama gone to tapp my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!”
Below are some of the main false claims Trump has made in recent months that were made not only with evidence, but went on to be proven categorically false:
Says Hillary Clinton is “wrong” to say he mocked a disabled reporter. On video mocking the reporter.
“14 percent of noncitizens are registered to vote.” No evidence to support this claim.
Trump claims that over 3 million people voted illegally to explain the reason he lost the popular vote. No evidence to support this claim.
“I have tremendous support from women.” Lags well behind past GOP candidates.
“The @nytimes states today that DJT believes ‘more countries should acquire nuclear weapons.’ How dishonest are they. I never said this!” He is quoted a NY Times interview stating exactly just that.
“We had a massive landslide victory, as you know, in the Electoral College.” Historically it is among the bottom 25%.
“Here in Philadelphia murder has been steady — I mean — just terribly increasing.” Present murder rate is lowest its been since 1993.
“If you were a Muslim, you could come in, if you were a Christian, it was impossible.” Christian and Muslim refugees from Muslim majority countries were statistically granted equal opportunity to enter US.
Says “109 people out of hundreds of thousands of travelers” were affected by the immigration executive order. It was actually 60,000 plus.
“The murder rate in our country is the highest it’s been in 47 years.” Has actually been trending downward since 1993 and currently at a historic low since then.
“Look at what’s happening last night in Sweden. Sweden, who would believe this? Sweden. They took in large numbers. They’re having problems like they never thought possible.” Nothing has happened in Sweden – per Sweden.
…and this is but a sampling. The complete list would go on seemingly without end.
